Now the time has come to introduce the four fresh and fly ladies that make up one of the hottest bands in KPOP. Last, but certainly not least nor forgotten, was 2NE1 from South Korea (members: CL, Bom, Minzy, Dara). If you don’t already know who they are, they are one of the top girl groups leading the forefront of the K-pop craze you might be seeing sprout up around you.
Words like “fierce” and “edgy” are commonly used to describe these ladies as they stand out among the usual stereotype of cute and coy girl groups in Korea. They capture their audience with their catchy pop tunes and colorful fashion statements. It’s no wonder that they’ve also caught the attention of fashion designer, Jeremy Scott, who came to introduce the girls onstage and who also lent his skills in designing their costumes. They aren’t boring, basic, or vanilla. In fact, they are the exact opposite and demand your attention with their overflowing confidence (check out their song, Naega Jael JalNaga, which translates to “I Am The Best”).
You know that this was the moment everyone had been waiting for when suddenly you found yourself pushed up 10 feet ahead from your previous spot. My view became even more spectacular than it was before, but in exchange, there was no such thing as personal space anymore, haha. I wasn’t about to complain though! If you were watching the stream, then you saw how the much anticipated moment was built up by the screen showing us how 2NE1 were coming in from outside and making their way to us in the corridors of the building. As soon as they hit the stage, the crowd went into a frenzy - people screaming/singing left and right, hands up in the air, and the energy in the room ping-ponging back and forth from the crowd to the stage. Since this was streamed live over the internet, I won’t go into details of the performance because you can re-watch the whole thing on MTV, but I will say that this is a group that is meant to be seen LIVE. If it looked good online, it was even more amazing in person. It was as if they had always performed in New York and as if these were fans that they knew would always come to see them perform each time.
When it came for 2NE1 to be crowned as Best New Band In The World, there was nothing but love radiating in the room for them as confetti showered over everyone and smiles all around. They stood there for a good moment, bowing and waving - graciously basking in the title given to them, while fans chanted their name. It was a joyous ending for what had been an incredible concert and a long, but worthwhile day.

It has been said before, but music really is universal. It was great being able to see these artists that speak different languages, come together for one show and give us a sample of their music that has been not just recognized in their own countries, but all over the world. The internet has provided a way for people to explore music and cultures that might not be available in their own surroundings, and this show was just a small example of that and how far we have come as a global community. If you have been blessed with a talent of your own, I hope that you will be able to share it with all of us in the future and that maybe someday, we’ll be attending your concert or watching you via live-stream. Good luck! The world is waiting for you.
